Resident Life: Moonlighting

Opportunities to supplement experience and income remain plentiful in Orange County as in many parts of California in general. Current and past residents have accepted moonlighting positions offered by an array of employers: private psychiatrists in solo or group practice, nursing homes, county-funded clinics or hospitals, and the California Department of Corrections, to name a few. Some local hospitals pays residents to be on-call in the evenings and weekends.

Internal moonlighting on the weekends is now available at UCI Medical Center in the Department of Psychiatry. Residents work directly with attendings to round in the hospital and see consultations on weekends, so this internal moonlighting also includes excellent additional educational opportunities to get clinical teaching and supervision from UCI attendings.

Whereas the majority of residents pursue extra clinical experience, some have received supplementary compensation for other projects such as writing or speaking engagements.

In general, the UCI Psychiatry Department may permit internal and external moonlighting activity for residents in good standing who receive written pre-approval from the residency training director provided the activity does not conflict with the resident's academic performance and as long as it complies with the requirements of ACGME.

"There are many opportunities to moonlight as you advance through the residency. It's a great chance to get some real-world experience, not to mention some well-deserved extra income. Many of the residents work the same jobs, so it gives you a level of comfort as you're out there on your own."
